NFL player Pat Tillman's sibling stands accused of burning down a local post office
Brother of Late NFL Star Charged with Post Office Arson
Richard Tillman, the brother of the late NFL star and Army Ranger Patrick Tillman, has found himself in legal trouble after a series of events that started with mental health issues and escalated into a high-profile criminal case.
According to reports from the San Francisco Chronicle, Tillman has been battling severe mental health issues for several years, with his livestreams and social media postings showing a deteriorating state. His recent behavior included posting videos in which he threatened to "take down the system," including the U.S. government, and becoming increasingly antagonistic towards family and friends despite offers of help.
In July 2022, these issues culminated in a tragic incident. Tillman allegedly placed incendiary devices in his vehicle, doused them with lighter fluid, and drove the vehicle into the lobby of the Almaden Valley U.S. Post Office in San Jose, California. He then lit the vehicle on fire with a match and allegedly livestreamed the event on YouTube using his phone. The fire destroyed the interior of the post office, requiring a large response from the fire department, though no injuries were reported.
Following the incident, Tillman was charged for fire destruction of the Almaden Valley U.S. Post Office. If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison for malicious destruction of government property.
A judge ordered a mental competency test before Tillman's trial, reflecting ongoing concerns about his mental fitness to stand trial. His bail was set at $135,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 6, 2025, in district court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins.
Tillman's legal troubles began in 2023 with misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence, trespassing, and disobeying court orders, with multiple missed court appearances leading to warrants for his arrest.
