NHS launches free obesity medication at 5,000 CVS pharmacies nationwide

A new anti-obesity initiative led by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is now underway. Over 5,000 pharmacies across the country are taking part, offering free medication to eligible patients as part of a broader health drive.

The program began with early pharmacy visits in late November, though participation has been modest due to the holiday season. By that time, around 30,000 text messages had already been sent to potential beneficiaries, informing them of their eligibility. These messages direct recipients to book appointments at public health units after receiving a referral.

Eligible patients must first consult a physician, who confirms their suitability and prescribes short-term treatment. Once approved, they can collect their medication at no cost from participating cvs pharmacies. The scheme also stresses the importance of combining medication with better eating habits for lasting results. To support the rollout, the Panhellenic Medical Association has provided pharmacists with detailed guidance. This includes advice on proper drug use, managing side effects, and counselling patients effectively. Officials expect the number of text messages—and participants—to grow as more medical assessments are completed.

The NHS initiative aims to tackle obesity by making medication more accessible while encouraging healthier lifestyles. With thousands of cvs pharmacies involved and patient referrals increasing, the program is set to expand in the coming months. Free prescriptions and professional support form the core of the effort.
