Norovirus Outbreak Affects 100 on Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas
A Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the Serenade of the Seas, has been hit by a norovirus outbreak during its voyage from San Diego to Miami. The ship, operated by the popular cruise line, set sail on September 19 and was due to arrive in Miami on Thursday, but the journey has been marred by illness.
Nearly 100 passengers and crew have fallen ill with the virus, which causes symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting. The outbreak, which began on September 28, has affected 5% of the 1,874 passengers and 0.5% of the 883 crew members. This is the second such outbreak on a Royal Caribbean cruise in two months.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been notified and is remotely monitoring the situation. They recommend passengers wash their hands thoroughly and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms. Royal Caribbean and the crew have taken steps to contain the outbreak, including isolating ill passengers and crew, and increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures. The CDC is also reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
The Serenade of the Seas is expected to arrive in Miami as scheduled. Travelers are advised to consider getting travel insurance to protect their investment in case of medical emergencies or trip interruptions. Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause gastrointestinal illness, particularly in closed environments like cruise ships.
