Dance demo in the North - can a flash mob make a difference? - Northern Germany Rises Against Violence Toward Women in Mass Protests
Northern Germany is set to join a global protest against violence toward women and girls this weekend. The One Billion Rising event, taking place on February 14, will see demonstrations in over 30 locations across the region. Dance workshops have already been held in Rostock to prepare for the day's activities.
The One Billion Rising campaign has been held worldwide for years, with more than 200 countries taking part. In Germany alone, 160 cities have joined in previous years, including Dortmund, Mainz, Halle, Viersen, Krefeld, and Gronau. This Saturday, protests will expand across northern Germany, with events planned in Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Schwerin, Wismar, Neubrandenburg, Stralsund, and other cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lower Saxony.
In Rostock, Kati Voss, a youth and child counsellor, has led dance workshops to get participants ready. The campaign encourages people to film themselves dancing to the song Women on Fire for a worldwide video collage. Organisers hope the demonstrations will raise awareness of violence against women and push for better prevention measures.
Over 140 locations across Germany are taking part this year, making it one of the largest coordinated protests in the country.
The One Billion Rising event will bring together thousands of women in northern Germany and beyond. Through dance and protest, participants aim to highlight ongoing violence against women and girls. The campaign continues to grow, with more cities joining each year.
