Cardiac Emergency Center - From Helicopter to Emergency Room - Oldenburg’s €145M Cardiac Emergency Hub to Revolutionize Critical Care by 2027

Oldenburg Hospital is constructing a state-of-the-art cardiac emergency centre, equipped with a rooftop helipad. Backed by €145 million from Lower Saxony, it will enhance emergency care upon its opening in 2027. The facility will boast nearly 300 beds and advanced operating theatres to serve the region.

The state of Lower Saxony has already committed €145 million for the new cardiac emergency centre, with additional funding planned before its 2027 launch. Social Affairs Minister Andreas Philippi (SPD) secured €18 million specifically for the helipad, formally presenting the grant in 2025.

The helipad will be situated on the hospital's roof, enabling rescue helicopters to land directly above the emergency department. A dedicated elevator will then transport patients directly to treatment, reducing critical transfer times. The city of Oldenburg supported the project early on by guaranteeing a loan for construction. Once operational, the centre will consolidate all acute, intensive, and cardiac care units under one roof. This design aims to minimize handoffs between departments and improve patient safety. The facility will also include a high-performance emergency hub alongside its 300-bed capacity.

The cardiac emergency centre is set to open in early 2027, with the first patients expected by summer. The helipad and integrated care model will facilitate faster, more efficient treatment for critical cases. The project represents a significant upgrade for emergency and cardiac care services in the Oldenburg region.
