Omsk surgeons save athlete's kidney after near-fatal training injury
A young athlete in Omsk has survived a severe kidney injury after a training accident. Surgeons at City Clinical Hospital No. 1 managed to save the organ despite extensive damage. The medical team used advanced techniques to stop internal bleeding and repair the rupture. The injury occurred during a training session, causing a 5-7 cm rupture in the kidney and significant internal bleeding. Doctors quickly identified the need for urgent intervention to prevent further complications.
Urologists Oleg Nepochatov and Dmitry Petryaev led the procedure, performing an endovascular embolization. This method successfully sealed the damaged artery and halted the bleeding without removing the kidney. The operation's success allowed the athlete to avoid more invasive surgery. After stabilising, the patient was discharged from the hospital and is now receiving outpatient care. Recovery is progressing well, with plans for a structured rehabilitation programme to begin shortly.
The athlete is expected to return to sports training once fully recovered. The procedure's outcome highlights the effectiveness of modern medical techniques in treating severe injuries. Doctors will continue monitoring progress during the rehabilitation phase.
