One Man’s Free Ambulance Service Saves Lives in Ho Chi Minh City

For nearly five years, Vo Minh Cong has run a free ambulance service in Ho Chi Minh City. His work supports disadvantaged residents who struggle with medical transport costs. The initiative has now completed nearly 1,000 emergency transfers, offering critical help to those in need.

Vo Minh Cong began his mission using his own seven-seat car to transport accident victims and seriously ill patients. Recognising the gaps in emergency care, he expanded his efforts with the help of relatives, friends, and locals. In 2022, he purchased a fully equipped ambulance, fitted with a stretcher, oxygen tanks, and essential medical supplies. The vehicle operates around the clock, ensuring no call for help goes unanswered.

Beyond emergency transport, Cong has assisted over 60 poor households by covering hospital fee advances totalling more than VNĐ360 million ($13,700). He has also provided funeral support for over 50 cases, contributing nearly VNĐ500 million ($19,000). His deep understanding of local hardships drives his involvement in broader social welfare activities. The Vietnamese NGO Blue Dragon Foundation supported Cong’s efforts in 2022, reinforcing the service’s reach. Local authorities have praised the initiative, noting its importance in areas where hospitals are far away. However, the project’s future depends on continued community donations and backing.

Vo Minh Cong’s ambulance service has become a lifeline for many in Ho Chi Minh City. With nearly 1,000 emergency transfers and substantial financial aid provided, the initiative fills a vital gap in healthcare access. Its long-term success will rely on ongoing support from donors and the community.
