Orion is initiating a product recall for Cham Carp Cakes due to a possible mold issue
Orion, a prominent South Korean confectionery company, has announced a recall of its Cham Carp Cakes due to potential mold contamination. The recall involves approximately 1.5 billion won ($1.1 million) worth of cakes after seven consumer reports of mold contamination surfaced.
The Cham Carp Cakes, a popular fish-shaped pie filled with crushed red beans, are the subject of the recall. Orion has asked distributors to halt sales and is working to complete the recall promptly.
Causes and Response
The mold contamination was identified in the cakes, and Orion attributed the issue to flaws in their production line management and quality control systems. The company has commissioned additional external testing for rigorous verification, and the further testing results from the independent organization are not yet available.
Orion has also made improvements to the packaging line where the issue occurred and is conducting a comprehensive inspection of all production processes. Production is expected to resume after safety verifications by August 1, 2025.
In a public apology on its website, Orion acknowledged the flaws in its processes and assured customers that it is taking all necessary measures to improve them. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has been notified of the issue by Orion.
Current Status
Despite Orion's request for retailers to do so, the distribution of Cham Carp Cakes to the market is not currently halted. It remains unclear whether the mold contamination affects all units produced before the recall or only a portion of them.
Orion has not specified whether the mold is harmful to humans, but the initial inspection by the company indicated that it is not. The company will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, consumers are advised to check the production date of their Cham Carp Cakes. If the date is before July 23, 2025, it is recommended to avoid consumption and contact the retailer for a refund or replacement.
