Pentagon Discontinues Obligation for Weekly 'Five Key Points' Email Circulation
The Pentagon has announced the termination of a three-month-long requirement for civilian employees to submit weekly reports detailing their accomplishments, a policy instated by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). As per a recent email sent to the DOD civilian workforce, the Department of Defense (DoD) has concluded the "five-bullet exercise."
The initiative, first implemented in February, led civilians to submit weekly updates to their supervisors, resulting from a directive from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) guided by DOGE. Musk initially stated that failure to comply with the requirement would be regarded as resignation.
Regarding the weekly reports, supervisors were instructed not to respond initially, but by the end of February, the department formalized the reporting structure. Now, the Pentagon requests employees to submit at least one idea to enhance the DoD's efficiency or reduce waste, with their suggestions to be devoid of sensitive or classified information.
The decision to cease the weekly reporting comes as the Space Force, a significant part of the DoD civilian workforce, endures a contraction of around 14 percent, according to Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman. The total number of civilian employees in the DoD stands at approximately 878,000, as per recent data.
Although the Pentagon has yet to reveal employees' responses, or the lack thereof, to the weekly reports as a reason for any disciplinary actions, a Navy veteran reported being terminated for riffing on the requirement by converting her accomplishments into a comedic limerick instead of the requisite bullet points.
This relief from the burdensome reporting task has improved morale among the workforce, with the DoD leaning towards traditional performance evaluation methods. The termination of the program marks a return to conventional practices within the Department of Defense.
