Permanently Held in Psychiatric Care: Individual Involved in Aschaffenburg Incident
Aschaffenburg - The vicious knife attacker from Aschaffenburg may face a lifetime in a mental health institution, as the prosecution has submitted an application for a security procedure. The man is accused of a horrendous spree of crimes, including murder, attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, and threats. Yet, he has only been provisionally hospitalized in a mental health facility up until now.
The Afghan, suspected of attacking a 2-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man to death in a park back in January, seems to have been suffering from a mental illness, according to initial investigations. Evidence was found, such as psychiatric medication in his residence, supporting this theory.
Mental Illness Likely Present
A psychiatric expert has diagnosed the defendant with a mental illness, possibly impairing his judgment during the attack in the Schöntal Park near the city center of Aschaffenburg. Although no signs of radicalization or links to Islamist or extremist backgrounds have been identified, the crime doesn't appear to be politically or ideologically motivated.
The expert suggests that the suspect's mental illness is not only temporary and, if it cannot be cured, there's a high probability of further aggressive acts. The authorities have withheld the specific disease diagnoses for privacy reasons.

Investigations suggest the suspect targeted a kindergarten group on the day of the crime. He is said to have attacked the 2-year-old boy of Moroccan origin sitting in a wheelbarrow, repeatedly stabbing him with a 32-centimeter kitchen knife without warning. The boy tragically passed away.

The refugee also attacked a 2-year-old Syrian girl, who was also in the wheelbarrow. A then 59-year-old German kindergarten teacher tried to intervene, only to have her hand broken as the man pushed her aside.
A 41-year-old German father, out in the park with his own 2-year-old child, bravely tried to help the victims but succumbed to the knife attacker's fierce attack. A then 72-year-old German survivor endured several stab wounds but managed to live through the ordeal. The suspected perpetrator was apprehended shortly after the attack.
Possible Trial for Prior Incident
The public prosecutor's office also plans to prosecute a previous incident that gained public attention following the attack on the children in the park. Months before the assault, the suspect allegedly threatened a female resident in a refugee shelter with a butcher's knife, causing minor injuries. As the case remained unsolved, the public prosecutor's office later investigated police officers involved in the incident on suspicion of obstruction of justice. The investigation's outcome is still pending.
