Person Meets Fatal End After Being Drawn into MRI Equipment (Revised)

In a tragic incident, a 61-year-old man lost his life after being sucked into an MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York. The man was wearing a large metallic chain around his neck, which is believed to have caused the accident.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the man's identity has not been released. Big signs at the MRI facility read "MRI Do Not Enter" and "Posted no trespassing, keep out."

Safety protocols are in place to prevent such accidents caused by metallic objects during MRI scans. These protocols include the removal of metal objects, pre-scan questionnaires, the use of ferromagnetic detectors, safety briefings, controlled access, education and awareness, and regular maintenance and safety checks.

Patients are required to remove all metal objects such as jewelry, clothing with metal parts, and metal implants if possible. They are also typically asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding any metal objects or implants in their body. Hospitals use ferromagnetic detectors to screen patients and visitors for hidden metal objects.

Patients and accompanying individuals are briefed on the dangers of metal objects in the MRI suite and instructed not to bring any metal items into the room. Access to the MRI room is strictly controlled, and unauthorized entry is discouraged. Patients are educated about the risks associated with metal objects in MRI environments and the importance of adhering to safety protocols to avoid accidents.

On Thursday, patients who showed up for appointments were turned away as the MRI facility responded to the incident. The Nassau County Police Department responded to a 911 call for an aided at the MRI facility. The incident occurred during a scan for someone else on Wednesday.

This is not the first time such a horror story has occurred involving MRI machines. In 2023, a woman got shot in the butt by her own gun after failing to disclose she had a firearm during her MRI. There have also been reports of incidents where patients failed to disclose they were wearing metal implants or accessories, such as a butt plug.

The potential for damage exists when anything metal comes in close proximity to the magnet powering the MRI. It is capable of potentially picking up a tank, as demonstrated by its significant power.

In light of this incident, it is crucial to adhere to safety protocols and to be honest about any metal objects or implants in one's body when undergoing an MRI. A representative at nearby Northwell Health System explained the rigorous protocols followed to prevent unwanted visitors from entering an MRI scan.

(Update) The man's condition has been updated at 10:25 p.m. ET, he is no longer in critical condition and has died. He was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition following the incident.

  1. The tragedy at Nassau Open MRI underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols when metal objects are near MRI machines, as the potential for damage is significant.
  2. In a similar incident, a woman was shot in her butt by her own gun in 2023 due to failing to disclose she had a firearm during her MRI, emphasizing the importance of honesty regarding metal objects.
  3. Safety protocols at MRI facilities include the removal of metallic objects, pre-scan questionnaires, the use of ferromagnetic detectors, controlled access, education, and regular maintenance checks to prevent accidents related to metal objects.
  4. Patients undergoing MRI scans are required to disclose any metal implants or accessories, such as a metallic chain or a butt plug, to avoid accidents like the one at Nassau Open MRI.
