Pharmacist warns: Get these two critical vaccines before winter hits
As winter approaches, health experts are urging people to get vaccinated against seasonal illnesses. Natalie Powers, a pharmacist at Kinney Drugs, has highlighted the importance of protecting against RSV and pneumococcal pneumonia. She recommends acting now before infections peak over Christmas and into early 2026.
Powers advises two key vaccines for adults at higher risk. For RSV, she suggests Arexvy or Abrysvo, particularly for those aged 60 and over or adults 18-59 with underlying health conditions. For pneumococcal disease, Prevnar 20 or Pneumovax 23 are recommended for anyone 65 or older, as well as younger adults with risk factors.
The call to action comes as pharmacies prepare for increased demand. Powers’ recommendations align with current health guidance, aiming to reduce hospitalisations over the festive period. Those eligible are encouraged to book their vaccinations as soon as possible.
