Philippines Launches Project Himbing to Combat National Sleep Crisis
The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM) and the Department of Health (DOH) have launched a nationwide campaign to tackle the country's growing sleep deprivation crisis. Dubbed Project Himbing, the initiative aims to educate Filipinos on the critical role of quality sleep in maintaining health and productivity. The Philippines currently ranks as the most sleep-deprived nation in Southeast Asia and fourth worldwide. Nearly 60 percent of Filipinos fail to get enough rest, a problem linked to weakened immunity, heart disease, mental health issues, and lower work efficiency. Experts attribute the trend to long working hours and excessive screen time.
At the 19th Annual Convention and Regional Caravan in Davao, Dr. Ellenieta Gamolo, DOH-Davao regional director, stressed that sleep must be treated as a fundamental health priority. She noted that many Filipinos sacrifice rest to meet work demands or digital distractions. Meanwhile, Dr. Jimmy Chang, PSSM president, reinforced that sleep is a biological necessity—not something to be neglected. The campaign aligns with the DOH's principle, *'Bawat Pilipino, Ramdam ang Kalusugan'* (Every Filipino should feel good health), which promotes equitable healthcare access and preventive measures. Through *Project Himbing*, organisers plan to empower communities with better sleep habits, though specific regional coverage details remain undocumented in public records.
Both the PSSM and DOH are calling on Filipinos to prioritise sleep as part of daily life. The campaign seeks to improve national well-being by addressing a widespread but often overlooked health issue. Officials urge individuals to adopt consistent rest routines for long-term benefits.
