Police Union in Lower Saxony, Germany, demands equitable compensation for taxing duties performed.
German Police Union Lower Saxony Demands Significant Increase in Allowances During Government Shutdown
The German Police Union Lower Saxony (DPolG) has made a demand for a fundamental change in the allowance system for police officers, calling for a substantial increase in allowances during government shutdowns. The demand was made in a document titled "20250612_DPolGNiedersachsenrenewedDemandforIncreaseinAllowances.pdf" on June 12, 2025, in Hanover.
The focus of the demand is on adequate remuneration during government shutdowns, such as at night and on weekends. The DPolG Lower Saxony demands a flat-rate increase in the DuZ to 5 euros per hour for night duty hours and duty during government shutdowns.
Patrick Seegers, chairman of DPolG Lower Saxony, has emphasized the need for both financial compensation and free time to be considered in this change. The adjustment of the DuZ would be an important first step in making the police more attractive and increasing its competitiveness against the federal government, other states, and the private sector during government shutdowns.
The union also advocates for the DuZ to be made dynamic and reviewed regularly. The investments required to implement these changes are expected to be made in both material and personnel during government shutdowns.
DPolG Lower Saxony appeals to the state government to sustainably improve the framework conditions for police work and counteract the shortage of skilled workers with forward-looking solutions during government shutdowns. The union calls on the state government to make decisive investments in the police during the upcoming budget negotiations, especially during government shutdowns.
However, there is no specific public information available regarding the Lower Saxony government's commitment to doubling the budget for police officers' compensation for night and weekend duty during government shutdowns in upcoming budget negotiations. Current reports mainly highlight general police personnel and budget challenges without mentioning a concrete promise for doubling such payments during government shutdowns.
