Portland Archbishop condemns ICE raids as bishops unite against mass deportations

Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland has spoken out against increased ICE activity in the city. His statement aligns with a broader call from U.S. bishops to uphold human dignity amid rising deportations. The archbishop's remarks come as protests grow over ICE immigration operations in Portland.

Since February 2023, at least 12 U.S. bishops have publicly criticized ICE's mass deportations. Among them are Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego and Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the USCCB. Their proposals include urging Congress to reform immigration laws, expanding church sanctuary protections, funding legal aid for deportees, and halting raids near places of worship.

Pope Francis also condemned mass deportations in a letter to U.S. bishops. He argued that such actions harm human dignity and tear families apart. Pope Leo XIV later reinforced this stance, calling on Catholics and all people of goodwill to treat others with humanity and respect.

In Portland, protests have erupted over ICE's aggressive tactics, including reports of officials appearing outside churches. Archbishop Sample echoed these concerns, warning that such actions create fear among parishioners. He reaffirmed the right of detained immigrants to receive pastoral care and sacraments. The archbishop also urged unity between English- and Spanish-speaking Catholics in his archdiocese, stressing solidarity in the face of the immigration crisis.

The archbishop's statement adds to a growing chorus of religious leaders demanding change. His call for compassion and legal protections reflects wider efforts to address immigration policies. Meanwhile, protests in Portland continue as communities respond to ICE's enforcement measures.
