Quickened Pace in the Golden Years: E-Bike Training in the Odenwald Forest

In the heart of Germany, the city of Darmstadt is buzzing with activities this weekend. On one hand, seniors are enjoying a safer and more confident ride with the successful completion of a bicycle safety training. On the other hand, climate activists are gearing up for a protest.

On Monday, September 15, 2020, the traffic safety school near the Michelstadt swimming pool played host to a free riding safety training for seniors, as part of the European Mobility Week. The head of the event program, Dieter Müller, oversaw the training which included lane-keeping exercises, a slalom course, and an emergency braking exercise. The seniors found the training to be a great experience and helpful education, as adaptations in riding style and practice are required for Pedelecs, a type of E-bike that has become increasingly popular among the elderly in the Odenwald region. Despite their noticeably heavier weight compared to conventional bicycles, Pedelecs offer a compact size and less sweating, making them an attractive option.

Meanwhile, Fridays for Future, a climate activist group, has announced a protest in Darmstadt for the coming Saturday. The protest will be followed by a bike ride, encouraging participants to embrace sustainable transportation.

The city is not only catering to the older generation and activists, but also to its youngest residents. On Sunday, a variety of activities are planned as part of World Children's Day. Over 60 stands are available for the youngest Darmstadters, offering a fun-filled day of learning and entertainment.

In addition, the city is opening its doors to its citizens. The new county administration building in Heppenheim will be welcoming visitors, allowing them to meet the employees and learn about their departments and activities.

Whether you're a senior looking to improve your cycling skills, a climate activist ready to make your voice heard, or a parent wanting to entertain your children, Darmstadt has something for everyone this weekend.
