In the heart of Düsseldorf, the bike street Am Wehrhahn boasts a clearly separated bike and pedestrian path, colourfully marked for safety. However, the road marking paint did not last a few months, and the city is now repainting the bike lane markings due to severe peeling.

The problems with the bike lane on Schadowstraße have been ongoing for years, with near-collisions between cyclists and pedestrians being a common concern. Markus Riedel, a cyclist who uses Schadowstraße daily, has observed such incidents due to pedestrians paying more attention to their phones than bike traffic.

The bike lane markings on Schadowstraße were intended to enhance safety on the redesigned shopping mile and separate pedestrians and cyclists. However, the initial white stripes applied five months ago are already peeled off. In an attempt to find a more durable solution, the city is testing different marking colours and materials on three sections of Schadowstraße.

The city's decision on the marking will be made by the end of September. Yet, the Federation of Taxpayers criticizes the city's approach, stating that going into a test phase after a failed attempt is not sensible.

Interestingly, the architects who redesigned Schadowstraße have so far rejected a colourful marking for their concept. Due to copyright reasons, the colourful marking of Am Wehrhahn cannot be used as a blueprint for Schadowstraße.

Despite the ongoing issues, the city has not yet commented on the costs of the new marking project. The search results do not provide information about the colour currently being tested to ensure that the bike lanes on Schadowstraße last longer.

As the city strives to find a lasting solution, the safety of cyclists and pedestrians remains a top priority. The repainting of the bike lane markings is a step towards ensuring a more secure environment for all users of Schadowstraße.
