In the heart of Bochum, Germany, a unique art project serves as a poignant reminder of the victims of National Socialism. The project, known as the 'Stumbling Stones' by Gunter Demnig, features 374 memorial stones embedded in the city's sidewalks, representing the fates of Jewish women and men, Sinti and Roma, politically persecuted individuals, people with disabilities, and victims due to their sexual orientation.

The Memorial Action, a joint initiative by the Municipal Integration Centre and the Children and Youth Ring Bochum, is inviting all residents of Bochum to participate in a cleaning action for these memorial stones. Scheduled between 22 September and 9 November, the action aims not only to maintain the memorial sites but also to strengthen awareness of historical responsibility and democratic values.

Cleaning materials will be provided by the organisers for the memorial action. Interested participants can register for the cleaning action by email at [email protected] or by phone at 0234 / 51 64 61 56. The action is open for both groups and individuals who wish to contribute.

The Stumbling Stones project has been a permanent feature of Bochum's cityscape since 2004. Sponsorships for the stones have been taken on by committed school classes, associations, and individuals who have intensively dealt with the biographies and make the stories of the victims visible. However, the sponsors of the memorial stones in Bochum are not specified in the available search results.

The cleaning action aims to keep the memory of the victims alive, serving as a powerful testament to the resilience and unity of the community in Bochum. By participating, individuals can play a part in preserving this significant piece of history and fostering a culture of remembrance and respect.
