**Water Hyacinth Threatens Recreational Activities in Bremen's Werdersee Lake**

In recent times, the Werdersee Lake in Bremen has become home to an invasive aquatic plant species - the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). This fast-growing plant has been causing concerns for environmental authorities and water sports enthusiasts due to its potential risks and impact on safety measures.

**Dangers for Water Users**

The water hyacinth's dense mats can create obstacles for swimmers and water sports participants, making movement difficult and trapping individuals, particularly children and inexperienced swimmers. Boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding become challenging as the plants clog waterways and entangle equipment.

Moreover, reduced visibility and the risk of entanglement in floating mats pose dangers for all water users. In addition, stagnant water beneath the mats can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests.

**Impact on Water Quality**

As the water hyacinth decomposes, it lowers oxygen levels in the water, which can harm fish and other aquatic life. The dense mats can also obstruct sunlight, affecting the overall health of the lake's ecosystem.

**Safety Measures and Prohibitions**

In light of these concerns, Bremen's environmental and sports authorities have issued a warning against water sports activities outside the designated bathing area of Werdersee Lake. Swimming will only be allowed in the official bathing area, marked by red buoys on the north shore of the lake.

Authorities strongly advise against navigating the lake with canoes, rowboats, or other sports boats, or engaging in underwater activities. The German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) states that the safety of bathers outside the designated bathing area cannot be guaranteed.

Starting this weekend, a decree from the environmental authority will be in effect, prohibiting all swimming and water sports activities outside the designated bathing area.

**Monitoring and Control Efforts**

The environmental authority continues to monitor the spread of the water hyacinth in Werdersee Lake. In early July, the swimming area in the lake was cleared of water hyacinth, but the measure proved insufficient.

The rapid spread of the water hyacinth in Werdersee Lake is currently more rapid than previously reported, making it the most concerning infestation in any lake or body of water in Bremen. The Senator for the Environment provides information on the temperature and water quality of Bremen's bathing lakes on their website.

**Health Risks and No Impact on Water Quality**

It is important to note that the water hyacinth poses no health risks and has no negative impact on water quality. The plant is non-toxic and does not contain any harmful substances.

**Community Involvement**

To help manage the water hyacinth, residents and visitors are encouraged to report any new sightings and participate in clean-up events. By working together, we can help maintain the safety and enjoyment of Werdersee Lake for all users.

Radio Bremen's science program could discuss alternative native species that can help control the spread of water hyacinth in Werdersee Lake, as part of a health-and-wellness segment focused on environmental conservation. Meanwhile, fitness-and-exercise enthusiasts may find alternative sports facilities to maintain their routines, as sports activities on the lake are currently restricted due to the water hyacinth infestation.
