Redefined regional classifications lead to over ten million drivers undergoing re-evaluation of their driving statuses.
In a recent update, the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) has announced changes to the regional classes for motor vehicle liability and comprehensive insurance. These changes will affect over 10 million drivers across Germany.
The regional classes for both types of insurance are based on the claims record of 413 German registration districts. For motor vehicle liability insurance, the decisive factor is the insurance benefits for injured third parties in traffic accidents. In comprehensive insurance, insurance benefits for self-inflicted accidents and for all other comprehensive damage cases are included in the calculation.
The regional classes for comprehensive insurance are advisory for insurance companies and can be applied immediately for new contracts and existing contracts starting from the next insurance year. Around 2.6 million full or partial comprehensive insured will have lower classifications in the future, while approximately 2.1 million will see an increase. For the remaining 314 districts and around 32.1 million motor vehicle liability insured, the regional classes of the previous year remain unchanged.
In particular, comparatively good damage records can be seen in Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The best damage record nationwide is in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg, with damages around 30% lower than the average. On the other hand, Offenbach and Berlin have high regional classes, with damages being almost 40% above the average.
Higher classes have mainly resulted in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia, with almost every fourth driver being upgraded. For 51 districts and around 5.3 million people, the regional classes have been calculated to be lower, while for 48 districts and around 5 million drivers, the regional classes have been calculated to be higher.
It's important to note that a change in the regional class does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the development of the entire motor vehicle insurance premium. Other factors such as type class, annual mileage, and development of repair costs also influence the premium. The regional classes for comprehensive insurance are calculated once a year by the GDV.
These changes in regional classes will have corresponding effects on the insurance premium, but the exact impact will depend on individual factors. Drivers are encouraged to discuss their specific situations with their insurance providers to understand how these changes may affect their premiums.
