Esteemed French biochemist and medical researcher, Émile Baulieu, passed away peacefully in Paris on May 30, 2025. Born as Étienne Blum on December 12, 1926, in Strasbourg, Baulieu changed his name during World War II when he joined the French Resistance to fight against Nazi occupation.

Baulieu made significant strides in the field of steroid hormones, eventually leading to a groundbreaking discovery in the 1980s. He is best known for inventing the abortion pill, RU-486 (mifepristone), which provides millions of women worldwide with a safe and inexpensive alternative to surgical abortions.

Baulieu faced considerable opposition for his work, particularly from anti-abortion groups in the United States. Despite facing threats and criticism throughout his career, he remained steadfast in his commitment to scientific progress and women's freedom. In 2023, French President Emmanuel Macron bestowed upon Baulieu France's highest honor, recognizing him as a "beacon of courage" and a "progressive mind who enabled women to win their freedom."

Baulieu's research was guided by his unwavering dedication to the advancements made possible by science and a deep desire to improve the lives of everyone. He was memorialized by his wife, Simone Harari Baulieu, who described him as a man committed to "the progress made possible by science, the dedication to women's freedom, and his desire to enable everyone to live better, longer lives."

Aside from his work in reproductive medicine, Baulieu conducted research on Alzheimer's disease and severe depression, and clinical trials for treatments are currently underway worldwide. He also delved into the world of art, forming friendships with artists such as Andy Warhol. Baulieu expressed fascination with artistic pursuits, stating that they purported to offer insight into the human soul, something he believed science could never achieve.

Baulieu passed away at the age of 98, leaving behind a legacy that has positively impacted countless lives worldwide. In addition to his scientific achievements, he will be remembered for his exceptional courage, revolutionary mind, and unwavering commitment to increasing human autonomy and well-being.
