"Report reveals that more than half of Gen Z individuals have already encountered hearing issues due to frequent exposure to loud music"
In a recent survey conducted by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), it was revealed that over half (58%) of the respondents, who are part of Generation Z, have experienced issues with their hearing due to exposure to loud music. This statistic highlights a pressing concern for the younger generation, as 75% of them are aware of the risks of permanent hearing loss due to loud noise.
Franki Oliver, Audiology Manager at RNID, stated that the survey findings show the prevalence of hearing issues related to loud music among Generation Z. Tinnitus and temporary hearing loss were among the issues reported by the respondents. Despite knowing the risks, 35% of the respondents do not plan on wearing earplugs or hearing protection at gigs and festivals.
However, there seems to be a potential opportunity for earplug manufacturers and live music promoters to address the concerns of Generation Z. They are focusing on comfort, style, and accessibility in their earplug designs. Earplugs that allow users to still enjoy live music are being developed, including filtered, reusable, and custom-made designs in diverse colors and styles.
Many venues and festivals now offer free earplugs on-site, often available behind bars or at entrances, making hearing protection more accessible and normalized for attendees. This move aims to address common barriers such as discomfort or the concern that earplugs will diminish the music experience. About 28% of Gen Z say they would be more likely to wear earplugs if they could still enjoy the full live music experience, and 20% would be encouraged if earplugs were free or more comfortable.
Tips promoted to live event attendees also include avoiding proximity to speakers and taking regular breaks from loud areas to reduce the risk of hearing damage. These combined efforts address Generation Z’s awareness of hearing risks, yet persistent reluctance in some to wear protection, by improving earplug design, offering them free on-site, and educating on effective hearing protection strategies at live events.
