Researchers in Durham's Sport and Exercise Sciences department receive new positions
The International Society of Qualitative Research in Sport and Exercise (IQRSSE) has announced its plans to advance qualitative research methodologies and perspectives within the fields of sport and exercise across diverse cultural and geographical contexts. This move is part of the society's global ambitions, as outlined in their mission and scope.
The IQRSSE, associated with the journal Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health (QRSEH), is committed to fostering international dialogue and collaboration among researchers worldwide. Key focus areas include investigating the lived experiences, meanings, and social processes related to sport and exercise, exploring health and well-being through qualitative lenses in diverse populations, and advancing qualitative methodologies and theoretical frameworks specific to sport, exercise, and health research.
The society also promotes interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives in qualitative sport and exercise research, supports emerging scholars, and encourages equitable research partnerships globally. These ambitions reflect a commitment to expanding the scope and impact of qualitative research in sport and exercise on a global scale, encouraging methodological rigor and relevance to health and social issues in sport and physical activity contexts.
Professor Martin Roderick has been appointed as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the QRSEH journal, joining Professor Kerry McGannon, who holds a position at Laurentian University in Canada. The QRSEH journal supports and promotes the advancement of qualitative research within the sociology of sport, sport and exercise psychology, sports coaching, and sports and exercise medicine. It provides access to researchers, practitioners, and students to read about the latest scholarly works in the field and learn about the latest developments in qualitative Sport and Exercise Science research.
In a significant development, Dr. Toni Williams has been elected as the president of the IQRSSE. Dr. Williams, who previously served as the treasurer of the society, will now drive the society forward and expand its reach globally. The society is planning to expand its membership from 300 to reach more qualitative researchers worldwide.
Established in 2019, the IQRSSE aims to bring together researchers from various disciplines interested in qualitative research to network and share ideas. The society recognises the importance of outreach, as demonstrated by the satellite conference to be held at the University of Santiago in Chile, catering to academics whose first language is not English.
More information about the undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences can be found on their webpages. Notably, the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at an unspecified university is ranked fourth in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2025.
The IQRSSE and QRSEH journal continue to strive for excellence in qualitative research within the fields of sport and exercise, fostering a global community of scholars dedicated to advancing our understanding of these vital areas.
