Rhineland-Palatinate Experiences Spike in Respiratory Illnesses

In the first three months of the year, Rhineland-Palatinate experienced a significant increase in respiratory illnesses, according to the health insurance provider DAK. The increase was attributed to a strong cold wave that swept through the region.

Data from around 132,000 employed DAK insured individuals revealed a twenty percent rise in sick days due to respiratory problems compared to the first quarter of 2024. Despite this increase, the overall sickness rate in the region remained relatively stable, sitting at 6.4 percent, just a slight uptick from the previous year.

The cold wave appears to have aggravated respiratory issues, which were exacerbated by changes in weather patterns, the spread of common viruses, and the colder temperatures that characterized the first quarter. While the overall sickness rate saw a marginal increase, the rise in respiratory-related absences was noteworthy.

The IGES Institute, based in Berlin, evaluated the data to assess the impact of these factors on absenteeism rates. The analysis covered DAK policyholders in Rhineland-Palatinate, including Mainz.
