Revolutionary Rubisco Protein Smoothie Debuts in California's Health Food Scene
A new protein smoothie made from 50,000 leaves has hit the shelves in California. Palmetto Superfoods stores now stock the Blade Smoothie, developed by Leaft Foods, which uses a unique plant-based protein called Rubisco. The product marks the startup's first major step into the US consumer market as it scales up production.
Leaft Foods has begun large-scale production of its Rubisco protein, extracted from alfalfa leaves. The company's process keeps the protein's delicate structure intact, making it a complete protein that outperforms other plant-based options. Rubisco, the most abundant protein in nature, is known for its quick digestion, bioavailable iron, and support for gut health, immunity, and hormonal balance.
The Blade Smoothie, priced at $13.95, contains 18g of Rubisco protein per serving, along with 522mg of essential amino acids per gram. Palmetto Superfoods is the first US foodservice chain to feature the drink on its menu, giving customers a new plant-based protein choice.
Since launching commercial production in 2019, Leaft Foods has seen steady demand growth, with markets in North America, Europe, and Asia expanding at around 12-15% annually. The company has also partnered with Lacto Japan and Foodstuffs to supply its protein to food manufacturers. Now, as it moves into both business-to-business and direct-to-consumer sales, Leaft aims to prove its scalability, validate its market position, and work toward profitability.
The Blade Smoothie brings a new plant-based protein option to US consumers. With its high nutritional value and sustainable sourcing, the product aligns with rising demand for alternative proteins. Leaft Foods continues to expand its production and partnerships as it targets broader market growth.
