Risks associated with cosmetic surgeries in the UAE: Local doctors issue warnings on economical procedures and unfulfilled pledges
In the bustling city of Dubai, where aesthetics and appearance hold significant value, a new ruling by the UAE Federal Supreme Court has shed light on the liability of plastic surgeons. This ruling comes as a response to the growing concern over botched and unnecessary surgeries, a problem that has been a topic of discussion among leading plastic surgeons in the region.
Dr Vikesh Vij, a plastic surgeon at Kaya Clinics, has seen his fair share of complications in patients who had procedures done by unqualified surgeons. These complications range from infections and asymmetries to irregularities and scarring. To avoid such outcomes, Dr Vij advises patients to do their research on the surgeon, check qualifications, and find out how much experience they have.
Another prominent figure in the field, Dr Rani Umul Khair, a specialist plastic surgeon at Dubai London Hospital Jumeirah, shares similar sentiments. She insists on scheduling two consultations before surgery, sharing consent forms in advance, and sometimes recommends psychiatric evaluation or counselling before surgery. For 'mommy makeover' procedures, Dr Khair emphasises that at least six months should pass after breastfeeding or weight stabilisation.
Dr Khair also suggests that patients ask their doctor to show them before-and-after photos of similar cases. This, she believes, helps patients understand the surgeon's technical skill and aesthetic approach. Dr Maurizio Viel, a plastic surgeon at Cornerstone Clinic, supports this idea and emphasises the importance of keeping surgeries simple and choosing techniques with the least risk.
If a doctor is found negligent in medical conduct during a cosmetic surgery, they are liable. This is a crucial point that both Dr Vij and Dr Viel agree upon. They both stress the importance of patients declaring their entire medical history to surgeons.
It's worth noting that cosmetic surgeries are not considered urgent medical procedures in the UAE. This means that patients have the time to do thorough research and make informed decisions. Dr Chandra Bose Vellani Thamunni, another respected plastic surgeon, emphasises the importance of patient compliance and understanding the procedure.
In a concerning trend, Dr Vij has observed that many botched surgeries are in patients who sought cheaper alternatives abroad, often in facilities that do not meet proper sterile standards. However, there are no relevant search results identifying any plastic surgeon in the United Arab Emirates who has treated a high number of botched or unnecessary surgeries linked to seeking cheaper alternatives.
The new ruling by the UAE Federal Supreme Court is a step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of patients undergoing cosmetic surgeries. As more patients seek aesthetic enhancements, it's crucial to remember that the process should be approached with caution and informed decisions. After all, your appearance is a reflection of your health and well-being.
