Rohingya Refugees Face Dire Health Crisis as Hunger Crisis in Rakhine Worsens
Rohingya refugees fleeing to Bangladesh are in dire health conditions, with alarming rates of malnutrition among children and pregnant women. Meanwhile, Rakhine state faces a severe hunger crisis due to conflict, blockades, and funding cuts, according to a recent report by Save the Children.
Save the Children's investigation in 2023 revealed that over 100,000 children in Rakhine are critically malnourished, with less than 2% receiving treatment. The organisation warned that thousands of children are at acute risk without immediate aid. The crisis is exacerbated by Myanmar's ruling junta suppressing information and restricting aid workers' access.
Five Rohingya survivors, including Ajib Bahar and her husband, resorted to eating leaves, roots, and grass before escaping to Bangladesh. Ajib's six-month-old child died due to lack of food and medicine in Rakhine. The couple, now eight months pregnant and worried about their unborn child, survived on minimal food in the refugee camp. Mohammed Idris, Ajib's husband, gave his meagre meals to his young ones. The United States and Britain have pledged $96 million in further assistance for the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh.
The hunger crisis in Rakhine, fueled by conflict and blockades, has left over 100,000 children critically malnourished. Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh face dire health conditions, with pregnant women and children in urgent need of aid. The international community must act swiftly to prevent further tragedies.
