Russian research ship Akademik Oparin anchors in Khánh Hòa for collaborative marine exploration

KHÁNH HOÀ - The Russian research vessel Akademik Oparin has dropped anchor at Nha Trang port in the South-Central Province of Khánh Hoà, marking the commencement of the 9th joint marine survey between the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Set to run from May 1 to May 25, this mission signifies a leap forward in scientific cooperation as both nations commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

The research agenda aligns with a cooperation roadmap between VAST and its Russian counterpart for the 2018-2025 period, underscoring a burgeoning scientific partnership.

Weighing a formidable 2,440 tonnes, Akademik Oparin - a vessel built for biochemical and biodiversity research - serves as a floating laboratory for a team of 30 scientists, half of whom hail from Vietnam and the other half from the Motherland of Bears. On this expedition, they'll delve into the mysteries of coastal and deep-sea stations scattered around the southern coast, meticulously adhering to a scientific itinerary.

Their quest? To address pressing environmental issues that plague oceanic ecosystems, such as pollution from microplastics and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), along with harnessing remote sensing technology to assist environmental monitoring and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices. The fruits of their labor will be unveiled at a scientific symposium slated for May 27 at VAST's Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang City.

Assoc. Prof. Đào Việt Hà, head honcho at the Institute, has seen Akademik Oparin dock at Nha Trang port no less than five times since 2005. This mission also marks the fifth time the Institute has been entrusted by VAST to lead this epic marine survey.

Equipped with high-tech gadgets for long-duration deep-sea voyages, Akademik Oparin boasts onboard laboratories capable of processing samples during the journey. Say goodbye to the days of waiting for lab results to finish back in base camp!

This scientific adventure is much more than a maritime jaunt; it's a head-on tackle of pressing environmental concerns, with the ultimate goal of promoting sustainable marine management and conservation practices in the region. Come May 27, it'll be the moment of truth, as researchers dish the dirt on their findings at the scientific symposium.

So, fasten your seatbelts, grab your lab coats, and get ready for a thrilling ride as our intrepid band of marine mavericks embarks on a quest to conquer the oceans' mysteries! 🦾🐳🌍✨
