Russia's Ministry of Health Proposes Doctors Prescribing Supplements

Russia's Ministry of Health has proposed a significant change in healthcare: allowing doctors and paramedics to prescribe dietary supplements from an approved list. This initiative aims to ensure patients receive only products with proven safety and benefits.

The approved list will be dynamic, continually updated based on medical practice and emerging scientific research. It will include only high-quality products that meet strict quality and efficacy standards set by the Russian government and the Eurasian Economic Union. Patients will have the right to refuse a specific ingredient or choose a different product, similar to the choice between branded and generic medications. Prescribed supplements must have medical indications and will be recorded in the patient's medical file.

The initiative comes as public perception of dietary supplements in Russia shifts, with more people using them to address nutritional deficiencies. However, the approved supplements may not be the most expensive, as they are designed for mass consumption. Unfortunately, specific information about the companies or institutions behind these supplements is currently unavailable.

The final decision on supplement use rests with the patient, promoting informed choice. The registry of approved supplements is designed to provide a reliable source of high-quality products, ensuring patients receive the best possible care.
