Russia's New DS Rules: Doctors Can Now Prescribe Supplements
New regulations for dietary supplements (DS) in Russia have come into effect, with significant changes in their prescription and quality control. The internet and word-of-mouth have sparked patient interest, with nearly half seeking DS advice from their doctors.
From September 1, doctors can prescribe registered DS with specific medical indications. This shift comes as 70% of Russian doctors consume DS themselves, indicating their trust in these supplements. The move is driven by patient demand, with many having used DS previously and found them satisfactory. Some patients prefer DS as 'natural means' of treatment.
The government will set quality criteria for DS and their raw materials. Rospotrebnadzor and the Ministry of Health will collaborate to create a list of DS allowed for medical use. This list will be based on medical indications, ensuring that only appropriate supplements are prescribed. Doctors are generally willing to officially prescribe DS, with a majority open to the idea.
The new rules for dietary supplements in Russia aim to balance patient demand with medical oversight. With quality criteria set and a list of medically approved DS in the works, doctors can now prescribe these supplements with clear guidelines. This change reflects the growing acceptance and use of DS among both patients and healthcare professionals.
