Counseling and Support Telephones Handle Over 60,000 Calls - Saxony-Anhalt's crisis hotlines see record calls as loneliness and anxiety surge

Support and crisis hotlines in Saxony-Anhalt saw a sharp rise in calls during 2024. Over 60,000 people reached out for help, marking a 15% increase compared to the previous year. Many callers preferred anonymous phone conversations to discuss personal struggles with trained listeners.

The state's three Telefonseelsorge centres handled nearly 43,000 calls in 2024—around 12,000 more than in 2023. Callers frequently raised issues like loneliness, family conflicts, depression, and anxiety. Conversations grew longer and more emotionally intense over the year.

Children and youth helplines received over 15,700 calls, an increase of more than 3,000 from 2023. Young people mostly sought advice on school and vocational training problems, friendships, and romantic relationships. The state allocated nearly €370,000 in funding to maintain these services.

Saxony-Anhalt also operates a victim support hotline, launched in February 2022. Staffed by Ministry of Justice employees, it connects crime victims with specialised support organisations. Many users value the anonymity and professional guidance offered by phone.

The rising call numbers reflect growing demand for mental health and crisis support in Saxony-Anhalt. Funding and staffing have expanded to meet this need, ensuring anonymous help remains accessible. The hotlines continue to serve as a key resource for those facing personal or emotional difficulties.
