Significantly fewer COVID-19 cases at the start of flu season - Saxony's Respiratory Infections Stable, COVID-19 Down 2.5x

The respiratory infection situation in Saxony is stable and in line with seasonal expectations, according to recent reports. While COVID-19 cases are lower than last year, influenza and RSV infections have started to appear.

The 2024/2025 season has seen a total of 44,428 influenza cases, 15,369 COVID-19 cases, and 7,933 RSV infections in Saxony, as reported by LUA statistics. Notably, the number of COVID-19 cases is around 2.5 times lower than at the same time last year, with 258 cases recorded.

The respiratory infection situation in Saxony and nationwide is at the expected level for the season, with a slight increase in the 40th calendar week. Respiratory infections are at the expected level for the season, which runs from the 40th to the 17th calendar week. Influenza and RSV infections have been reported rarely so far, with 17 and 3 cases respectively.

In the first week of the flu season in 2025, two COVID-19 deaths were reported in Saxony. Tragically, a 77-year-old succumbed to a COVID infection in Erzgebirgskreis, despite suffering from other illnesses. Leipzig registered the most COVID-19 cases (42), while Erzgebirgskreis had the fewest (4). A total of 430 people aged 6 to 99 died in the 2024/2025 season, with the majority of deaths attributed to SARS-CoV-2 infection and influenza.
