Seoul's Samsung Medical Center unveils AI-powered smart ward for next-gen care

A new AI-powered smart ward has opened at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul’s Gangnam District. The high-tech facility uses voice controls, wearable sensors, and facial recognition to monitor patients and streamline care. Patients in the ward can manage their environment with voice commands. A simple request opens curtains or adjusts lighting. A tablet and large monitor display real-time biometric data from wearable devices, including heart rate and sleep patterns.

The bed itself tracks breathing, pulse, and sleep quality. In the bathroom, pulse monitors and fall-detection radars add an extra layer of safety. Facial recognition automatically unlocks doors for patients as they move around.

A tablet lets users review test results, consult doctors, call nurses, or choose meals. An AI robot, powered by OpenAI’s GPT model, also provides emotional support. Meanwhile, all patient data flows instantly to the nurses’ station, reducing manual checks.

Currently, the system focuses on transmitting biometric and room data to medical staff. Future plans include expanding its capabilities with more advanced agentic AI functions. The smart ward combines AI, wearables, and automation to improve patient monitoring. Real-time data sharing aims to ease the workload for nurses while enhancing care. Samsung Medical Center plans to further develop the technology in coming years.
