Shawn Johnson opens up about postpartum depression after third child
Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson has spoken openly about her battle with postpartum depression after welcoming her third child in 2023. The mother of three described feeling overwhelmed and disconnected, struggling to cope despite her usual self-care routines. Johnson’s difficulties began shortly after her youngest child was born. The baby, who was colicky, had very different needs compared to her older siblings—a 6-year-old daughter, Drew Hazel, and two sons, Jett James, 4, and Barrett, 2. She found herself prioritising the newborn’s care over her own well-being, making it hard to ask for support.
Her usual ways of lifting her mood—spending time in the sun and watching funny films—no longer worked. She later admitted to feeling like she was 'drowning,' losing control of herself and growing distant from her husband, Andrew East. The strain led to tension between them, adding to her emotional burden.
East eventually suggested they try therapy together. Exhausted and desperate for change, Johnson agreed. She now credits that decision as the turning point in her recovery, calling therapy a 'gift' from her husband. Johnson’s experience highlights the challenges many parents face after childbirth, particularly when a baby has complex needs. Therapy became a crucial step in her healing, helping her rebuild her connection with East and regain a sense of stability. The couple continues to navigate parenthood with three young children.
