First Responders in Fire Incident: "One Just Functions Then" - Six Young First Responders Save Lives in Chemnitz Nursing Home Fire

Six young first responders sprang into action during a fire at a Chemnitz nursing home. Their quick thinking helped evacuate residents and prevent a far worse outcome. Despite lacking proper equipment, their training with the German Red Cross prepared them for the crisis.

Earlier that day, the group had visited the emergency dispatch centre in Chemnitz. Hours later, flames broke out at the care facility. Among the responders was Clemens Michael, who had prior experience as a volunteer firefighter. He moved swiftly to extinguish the fire while others guided residents to safety.

Twelve additional firefighters—both volunteers and professionals—were already on scene. They focused on securing the area and setting up equipment. Meanwhile, the six young rescuers, still in civilian clothes, took charge of the evacuation and initial medical care.

Maja Feil, one of the responders, remained calm under pressure. The team's composure was striking, especially given their limited resources. Their actions saved lives, though one 84-year-old man died in the blaze. Seven others were injured, with three requiring hospital treatment.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The incident highlighted the effectiveness of the group's recent emergency medical responder training. Their intervention averted a larger disaster, even without full first-aid gear. Authorities continue to investigate how the fire started.
