Sleep Disorders Affect Half a Million Kuwaitis, Center Sees 2,500 Cases This Year

Sleep disorders are a significant issue in Kuwait, affecting around 500,000 people. The Kuwait Sleep Medicine Center has already received 2,500 cases this year. Dr. Mohammed Abdel Salam, a specialist in the field, notes that these disorders can have severe consequences on both physical and mental health.

Sleep disorders, which account for a quarter to a third of a person's lifetime, are often linked to chronic diseases like obesity, hypertension, and dementia. Common disorders include sleep apnea, affecting 20% of cases, and insomnia, making up 30%. Mental health plays a crucial role in both diagnosing and managing these conditions.

To improve sleep quality, specialists recommend maintaining a regular exercise routine, a balanced diet, and limiting screen use before bedtime. However, there is no public data on how many Kuwaitis are treated for these disorders by Dr. Abdel Salam or the total number of sufferers. Sleep studies, conducted in specialized rooms with cameras and monitoring devices, help identify and understand these disorders.

With sleep disorders affecting a substantial portion of Kuwait's population, raising awareness and seeking professional help are crucial. The Kuwait Sleep Medicine Center's caseload this year underscores the need for more attention and resources dedicated to this often-overlooked aspect of health.
