South Korea's Youth Crisis Deepens as Sleep Loss and Smartphone Addiction Surge

South Korea is facing growing concerns over youth mental health and digital habits. New data reveals alarming trends in sleep deprivation, smartphone addiction, and suicide rates among adolescents. The figures highlight the challenges affecting millions of young people in the country. In 2025, children aged 9 to 18 averaged just 7 hours and 24 minutes of sleep on weekdays. This lack of rest coincides with rising digital dependency, as adolescents now spend 27.3 hours online each week. Instant messaging remains their most-used internet service.

Smartphone addiction poses a serious risk, with 43% of 10- to 19-year-olds classified as vulnerable. Middle school students are especially affected, with 47.6% showing signs of problematic usage. Additionally, 26.5% of students admitted to watching adult video content in 2024.

The mental health crisis is equally stark. Intentional self-harm has been the leading cause of death for youths since 2011. In 2024 alone, 1,749 teenagers died by suicide. These issues impact a large population, with 7.41 million children aged 9 to 24 currently living in the country. The statistics paint a troubling picture of adolescent well-being in South Korea. With nearly half of young people at risk of smartphone addiction and suicide rates remaining high, authorities face pressure to address these interconnected problems. The data underscores the need for targeted interventions to improve sleep, digital habits, and mental health support.
