Spanish Study Finds Unusual COVID-19 Symptom: Skin Lesions
A recent Spanish study has revealed an unusual symptom of COVID-19: skin lesions. The small-scale survey, conducted by local doctors, found that some patients experienced various skin changes during or after infection.
The most frequent skin manifestation was maculopapules - small, red or purplish bumps - appearing primarily on the trunk. Other less common lesions included asymmetrical swelling and redness on the legs, painful blisters, raised lesions, and signs of necrosis or livedo. These symptoms typically emerged within days of COVID-19 infection and were more prevalent in younger individuals.
Specialists stress the importance of examining these lesions to determine their cause, as skin changes can have numerous origins.
The Spanish study highlights a new aspect of COVID-19 symptoms, with skin lesions being more common than previously thought. Further research is needed to understand the connection between these skin changes and the virus, and how they might affect diagnosis and treatment.
