Wishful Thinking
In the recent past:
By: Quirin Wullrich
Life took a grim turn for a loving couple from the northern part of the region when the husband suffered a stroke three years ago, leaving him at the Valentinspark care home in Unterschleißheim. The wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness this spring, requiring palliative care in a clinic. For over two months, the couple was separated, but thanks to the "Wishes on Wheels" initiative of the German Red Cross (DRK), they reunited one last time before the wife sadly passed away.
This elderly couple faced two significant challenges in quick succession. Their poignant words will forever resonate with their family: "You think of me and I think of you, then we are together." With grief, they also carry gratitude for the incredible years they shared and the extraordinary people who made their farewell romantic and dignified.

A Last Goodbye
Though the wife visited her husband daily at the care home before her illness, they were forced apart due to her terminal diagnosis. After over two months without a chance to meet, the couple's wish to see each other one last time became stronger with each passing day. The son, wishing to honor his parents' heartfelt request, worked tirelessly to make their dream come true, declining to disclose their identities for privacy reasons.
He reached out to numerous care homes and facilities in vain until he managed to contact the ASB and subsequently "Wish Vehicle" through his father's nurse. The response came swiftly—just two hours later—and the "Wish Vehicle" team arranged the final meeting at the clinic in a matter of two days. Volunteers Bettina Stübner and Christian Romberg made the extraordinary effort to help, even sacrificing time from their personal responsibilities, according to the son.
