"Struggling with Depression": Top German Olympian Admits Mental Struggles

After winning the silver medal in racewalking at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, German race walker Jonathan Hilbert struggled with depression. As of August 2025, he has been open about his mental health struggles following that achievement[5].

Hilbert, who hails from Leipzig, has been actively involved in his racewalking career, sharing videos on social media of himself racewalking at a pace of about 3:45 per kilometer, sometimes alongside running friends, indicating he remains engaged in training and the sport[1][2]. This suggests he is continuing to focus on his athletic career despite previous challenges.

Last year, Hilbert sought psychotherapy to address his depression[3]. He stated that admitting he needed professional help was extremely crucial for him[4]. In an interview, he expressed concern about being a "One-Hit Wonder" due to his limited success after the Tokyo Olympics[6].

The World Championships, which will take place in Tokyo, will be a stepping stone for Hilbert towards the Olympics. Before the Olympics, Hilbert will make his comeback on the world stage at the World Championships[2].

Hilbert's signature event, the 50-kilometer walk, was removed from the Olympic program after his Olympic success[7]. However, he has moved past this setback and has changed coaches to help him adapt to the new 35-kilometer distance in race walking[3].

Hilbert and his girlfriend have clear visions for 2028. They are determined to make a strong comeback at the Olympics in Los Angeles[8]. Despite the challenges he has faced, Hilbert remains optimistic and focused on his goal of competing in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028[8].

Science has become an essential part of Hilbert's health-and-wellness journey as he seeks to address his mental health struggles. In his pursuit of mental health improvement, he underwent psychotherapy and acknowledged the importance of seeking professional help.
