Student Representative: Mental Health Issues Should Not Be a Taboo - Student Representative: Mental Health Issues Should Not Be a Taboo
Jakob Stamm has been elected Brandenburg’s new state student spokesman. He will represent pupils’ concerns to the government and push for better mental health support in schools. His role comes at a time when many students face anxiety and panic attacks linked to academic pressure.
Stamm has highlighted a growing crisis in Brandenburg’s education system. Students frequently suffer from panic attacks, particularly before exams. Eating disorders have also risen sharply, with social media often blamed for worsening the problem.
He has criticised the lack of school social workers, arguing that more staff are needed to help struggling pupils. At the same time, Stamm praised Education Minister Steffen Freiberg for staying open to discussions and providing regular updates to the State Student Council.
Beyond mental health, Stamm wants stronger media literacy lessons in primary schools. He is also campaigning for political education to become a compulsory subject in upper secondary school. Budget cuts in education remain a major concern, with Stamm warning they will harm students’ well-being and learning opportunities.
Stamm’s priorities include destigmatising mental health issues and securing more resources for schools. His discussions with policymakers aim to address both immediate student needs and long-term educational reforms. The success of these efforts will depend on government action and funding decisions in the coming months.
