Fallen prey to gaming addiction - even some dogs are - Study Finds Some Dogs Can Develop Addictive Play Behavior
A study by the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna has revealed that some dogs can exhibit addictive play behavior, with 33 out of 105 dogs showing signs of excessive fixation on toys. This behavior, similar to human behavioral addictions like gambling or online gaming, is more common in certain breeds.
The research, led by Stefanie Riemer, found that play behavior in dogs can become compulsive and develop into a behavioral addiction. This is not uncommon among mammals and some birds, but the extent and impact on dogs have not been widely studied until now.
Dogs displaying addictive play behavior may be easier to train due to their high play motivation. However, this strong play drive can also make them less suitable as family pets. They may prioritize their toy over food, owner's attention, and even their own well-being. This behavior is more prevalent in working breeds or lines, such as Malinois, Border Collies, and Labrador Retrievers, which have been selected for high play motivation over centuries.
The study highlights the importance of understanding and recognizing behavioral addictions in dogs. While these dogs may be highly trainable, their strong play drive requires careful management to ensure they are suitable and happy in their environments. Further research is needed to understand the neurobiological processes behind these behaviors and how to best support these dogs.
