Sudan in Crisis: Food Shortages, Malnourishment, and the Nation Overlooked amidst Humanitarian Disaster
SudaneseNeighborhood Rushed Daily for Free Meals from Charitable Kitchen
In the late afternoon, an Omdurman neighborhood witnesses a daily influx of residents, each carrying a lunchbox. At 3 PM, the kitchen of religious leader Sheikh El Amin commences serving meals free of charge. One regular diner, Kamal Bachir, attests to the significance of this facility, stating he would otherwise be constantly hungry. The kitchen serves thousands of meals daily, primarily for displaced individuals.
The community kitchen system has expanded nationwide, providing sustenance for hundreds of thousands of people. Volunteers, at times placing themselves in harm's way, are instrumental in these efforts. The kitchen run by Sheikh El Amin is solely funded by him.
Multiple kitchens rely directly on international aid. The sudden termination of American aid, as decided by former president Donald Trump in January 2025, has led to the closure of 60% of these kitchens. The United Nations estimates that among the 13 million internally displaced people in Sudan, half are children. Sudan is currently the only country in the world with multiple famine-stricken regions, and half its population faces food insecurity.
Albuluk Hospital in Khartoum is one of the few facilities equipped with a pediatric unit for patients suffering from severe acute malnutrition. While the hospital's pediatric department accommodates over 150 patients per day, it is understaffed, as per hospital director Dr. Ahmed Khojali.
