Swiss budget groceries slash costs but keep nutrition intact
A recent comparison by Kassensturz has revealed that budget shopping carts cost significantly less than branded items at major Swiss supermarkets. At Migros, the savings reached 38%, while Coop customers paid 51% less for budget alternatives. But does cheaper mean less healthy?
Both Migros and Coop confirmed that budget products maintain similar nutritional values to premium versions. A Coop spokesperson, Giovanni Iacomini, explained that cost reductions come from lower profit margins, simpler packaging, and adjusted quantities—not from cutting ingredient quality. However, some differences exist: Migros spokesperson Tristan Cerf noted that budget tortelloni, for example, contains less ricotta than the premium version.
The investigation shows that budget products can offer real savings without sacrificing nutritional value. While some ingredients may vary slightly, the core health benefits often stay the same. Shoppers are still advised to read labels carefully, as processing levels and ingredient quality can differ between products.
