Switzerland's crime victims receive instant, free support—no conviction needed

Switzerland ensures immediate support for all victims of crime, regardless of whether a perpetrator is convicted. The system guarantees free counselling, medical aid, and financial assistance for those affected by violence or accidents. Each canton funds its own victim support centre, providing tailored help during the first critical weeks after an incident.

Under Swiss law, anyone whose physical, psychological, or sexual well-being has been harmed by a crime is entitled to assistance. This includes free psychological counselling, emergency medical care, and initial legal advice. Financial support, capped at 76,000 CHF per victim, is also available, with amounts adjusted based on income.

Victims can seek help directly through a counselling centre or via the police—no formal report is required. In cases like the Kerzers incident, the counselling centre in Fribourg stressed that all services come at no cost to victims. However, the exact monthly expenses per person in Fribourg or Valais during the first 35 days remain undisclosed. The first phase of assistance usually covers 35 days, though this can be extended in large-scale emergencies. Some cantons, such as Bern, offer up to 35 nights of accommodation, while others set limits on hotel costs. Variations exist, but all cantons must provide at least one fully funded support centre. Delays in outreach can occur after accidents or disasters, as services coordinate with police investigations. Yet, support remains available even if no offender is identified or if the harm was unintentional.

Swiss victim assistance operates on a cantonal level, ensuring no one faces the aftermath of crime alone. Free, immediate help is guaranteed for all affected, with long-term support adjusted to individual financial needs. The system prioritises accessibility, offering multiple ways to request aid without bureaucratic barriers.
