Teen Snack Heroes Transform School Lunches with Healthy Recipes and Zero Waste

A group of ninth-grade students at Schwalmtal Community School has wrapped up a 13-week project focused on healthy eating and sustainability. The Snack Heroes: Healthy Recipes, Big Impact initiative, led by the Healthy Municipality Network of Viersen District, taught pupils how to prepare nutritious meals while reducing food waste. Local officials and food-sharing experts joined in to support the students’ efforts.

The project began as part of the Healthy Municipality Network, a prevention programme running until 2027. Supported by health insurers AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse, it aimed to teach young people about nutrition, mental well-being, and sustainable living.

The Snack Heroes project has left a lasting mark on the school community. Students gained hands-on experience in cooking, sustainability, and teamwork. Their cookbook and cafeteria contributions will continue to promote healthier eating habits among peers.
