Many sunscreens in Australia do not provide adequate protection - TGA Investigates 20 Sunscreen Products Over False SPF Claims

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has launched an investigation into the protection claims of 20 sunscreen products in Australia. Eight have been recalled, ten have had sales suspended, and two are under review due to concerns about their effectiveness.

The TGA's probe follows tests revealing that some sunscreens labelled as SPF 50+ actually provide only SPF 21. This means they offer significantly less protection than claimed, potentially exposing users to harmful UV rays. Only 4 out of the 20 tested products met their claimed sun protection factor. The investigation includes products using a formula from Wild Child Laboratories Pty Ltd, which may only offer an SPF as low as 4 despite advertising SPF 50+.

The TGA advises consumers to use alternative sunscreen products until their testing is complete. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
