In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an official visit to Argentina in July 2025, marking a historic milestone as the first Indian PM visit in 57 years. During his two-day trip, Modi was awarded the ‘Key to the City of Buenos Aires’ by Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government, a symbolic gesture of trust and friendship[2][3].

The visit came at a time when India-Argentina relations were celebrating their 75th anniversary, a milestone marked by various events, including the launch of a commemorative book, "India-Argentina: 75 Años de Relaciones Diplomáticas," and the elevation of the relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2019[3][1].

PM Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore at their statues in Buenos Aires, and honoured General José de San Martín, underscoring shared historical and cultural values[2].

Economically, the first quarter of 2025 saw Argentina register over US$1 billion in trade surplus with India, largely due to soybean oil exports. Both leaders agreed to further diversify and expand bilateral trade, including through sectoral partnerships in technology, defense, space, health, and pharmaceuticals[1][5].

Prime Minister Modi also requested Argentina’s support for expanding the India-Mercosur preferential trade agreement, which would open new opportunities for both sides. Discussions also focused on enhancing market access for agricultural and dairy products and sharing knowledge for sustainable agricultural practices[5].

Collaboration is expanding beyond trade to include defense, mining, oil & gas, nuclear energy, and scientific and technological exchanges[3][5].

In the realm of scientific cooperation, the launch of the National Biobank at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in New Delhi reflects India’s focus on genomics and population health—an area with potential for future bilateral scientific cooperation with Argentina[2][4].

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s capacity to produce affordable, high-quality medicines, suggesting opportunities for collaboration in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, though specific agreements with Argentina have not been detailed[5].

As the two nations continue to strengthen their ties, both countries share a vision for a more integrated and mutually beneficial future[1][2][3].
