The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has highlighted a potential connection between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of colorectal and bowel cancer. A study published in the International Journal of Cancer indicated that drinking four cups of coffee daily could lower the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence by 32%.

Involving 1,719 participants with colorectal cancer at stages 1 through 3, the study suggested that coffee might contribute to this outcome by reducing oxidative stress, aiding gut bacteria, inhibiting tumor growth, and helping protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Although the WCRF's findings demonstrate a link between coffee and colorectal cancer, it's essential to note that this association may differ depending on the type of coffee consumed. While caffeinated coffee presents a higher risk of rectal cancer, no such association with colon cancer was found. This might suggest that the body processes caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee differently.

To prevent colorectal cancer, individuals are advised to engage in physical activity, maintain a nutritious diet, and refrain from tobacco and alcohol use.

According to several studies, coffee consumption might be part of a dietary pattern that helps mitigate colorectal and bowel cancer risk. Though some authoritative bodies found no clear link between coffee and cancer risk overall, supportive evidence suggests that coffee may reduce the risk of certain cancers, including colorectal cancer. The greatest benefits are observed at moderate intake levels, around three to four cups per day.
