Thurgau unveils bold plan to combat its rising suicide crisis

Thurgau has launched a new strategy to tackle its above-average suicide rate. Authorities are rolling out coordinated measures to strengthen prevention efforts across the canton. A detailed report now outlines key actions to reduce deaths and support those at risk.

The canton’s suicide rate currently sits higher than the Swiss national average. In response, officials will expand awareness campaigns, including a flyer for World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. An annual drive will also encourage the voluntary surrender of firearms and unused medications.

Early intervention is central to the plan. Thurgau will promote and partially fund Ensa courses on 'First-Aid Conversations About Suicidal Thoughts'. These aim to train people in recognising and responding to suicidal behaviour. Ongoing monitoring will track suicide trends, with stakeholders meeting yearly to assess progress. A new guide for families affected by suicide is also in development. Deputy health leader Dr. sc. nat. Susanna Schuppisser is involved in implementing the measures.

The strategy combines public education, training, and regular reviews to address Thurgau’s suicide rate. Expanded campaigns and annual stakeholder meetings will ensure long-term oversight. The canton’s efforts focus on early detection, support, and reducing access to lethal means.
